JMeter : Open Source Performance Tool

These days, opensource tools are very popular.

One of the best tool, I am considering is JMeter.

JMeter is open source tool. It is Java based tool so it gives lots of free hand to work on cord part and handle it beautifully for coder or non-coder.

Lets start..

As I mentioned, JMeter is 100 % java-based tool which was originally designed to perform load testing of website or web-based application. Now it has increased some of test function to support functional test too.

Let’s talk about its history

Stefano Mazzocchi of the Apache Software Foundation was the original developer of JMeter. He wrote it primarily to test the performance of Apache JServ (now called as Apache Tomcat project). Apache later redesigned JMeter to enhance the GUI and to add functional testing capabilities

In short, JMeter is java based desktop performance testing tool with a graphical interface which run on any environment that accepts a Java virtual machine. JMeter uses Swing graphical API

Now one of important aspect of using new load testing tool is Protocol support.

JMeter supports below mentioned protocols:

  • Web − HTTP, HTTPS sites 'web 1.0' web 2.0 (ajax, flex and flex-ws-amf)
  • Web Services − SOAP / XML-RPC
  • Database via JDBC drivers
  • Directory − LDAP
  • Messaging Oriented service via JMS
  • Service − POP3, IMAP, SMTP
  • FTP Service

What is the features of JMeter ?
First one being an open source tool,
1.       It is FREE
2.      Full Swing and lightweight component support due available JAR files
3.      Saving test plans in XML format i.e. we can generate a test plan using a text editor.
4.      Full multi-threading framework
5.      Highly extensible.
6.      Capable of perform load as well functional testing (report would be differ from traditional one ) of the applications
7.      Platform-independent tool which means you can run it on any machine which support JVM

MI Listener in LoadRunner

In a regular LoadRunner load test scenario (not over a firewall), The Controller has direct access to the LoadRunner agents running on remote machines. This enables the Controller to connect directly to those machines. When running Vusers or monitoring applications over a firewall, this direct connection is blocked by the firewall. The connection cannot be established by the Controller, because it does not have permissions to open the firewall. You can use "HTTP" and "Citirix" protocol together in load runner. 2. Try to keep windows in full screen mode. Record scripts on mobile applications in LoadRunner : As LoadRunner 11 in Patch 3, Mobile App (HTTP/HTML) protocol added which can help us to record scripts of mobile apps. There are three recording options in the recording Wizard: 1.Record and Analyze Traffic - Use mobile sniffer agent to capture traffic and then analyze. This allows Vugen to connect to the mobile agent on the server or localhost and carry out the business process for recording. 2. Analyze Traffic - Analyze traffic using existing capture file to generate script. This allows Vugen to scan a pre-captured network traffic (WinPcap) file and generate the code based on the traffic. 3. Record Emulator - Record script using a mobile device emulator. This allows Vugen to record an emulator installed on the Vugen machine. With this option, you need to verify that you are able to bring up the emulator and navigate to a URL outside of Vugen to make sure the emulator settings are correct.
